The Hindu holiday of lights, Diwali, often lasts for five days. It is observed in the middle of October and the middle of November, during the Hindu lunar month of Kartika. One of the most widely celebrated Hindu holidays is Diwali, which represents the metaphysical triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The event is primarily connected to the goddess of prosperity, Lakshmi. But according to numerous local customs, it is associated with Sita and Rama, Durga, Vishnu, Kali, Dhanvantari, or Vishvakarman.

Originating in the Indian subcontinent, the five-day festival known as Diwali is deeply rooted in Indian culture. It is mentioned in early Sanskrit texts as occurring eighteen days after the Dussehra festival. The festivities commence with Dhanteras, marking the first day of the celebration. On this day, individuals prepare by cleaning their homes and creating intricate floor designs, such as rangoli.

The second day is Naraka Chaturdashi, or the regional equivalent of Diwali, primarily celebrated by Hindus in South India. The most significant day of Diwali falls on the third day, known as Lakshmi Pujan Day. This day is observed by Indian populations across the western, central, eastern, and northern regions. It is also regarded as the darkest night of the traditional month.

For the prosperity of the marital relationship between husband and wife, the Govardhan Puja takes place on the day following Lakshmi Puja, observed by the majority of Indians. Some Hindu communities celebrate the final day of the festival as Bhai Dooj, or its regional counterpart, which symbolizes the bond between sisters and brothers. Additionally, certain Hindu and Sikh artisan communities observe this day as Vishwakarma Puja, marking it with prayers and activities related to their trades.
